ASEAN Plus Three Emergency Rice Reserve
On 25 November 2022, Dr. Choomjet Karnjanakesorn, General Manager (GM) of the APTERR Secretariat, and Mr. Toshiki Tojo, Japanese Expert, warmly welcomed Mr. Yasuhiro Miyake, the new Japanese Expert of the ASEAN Food Security Information System (AFSIS) Secretariat, who visited the APTERR Secretariat office to introduce himself upon his assumption of duty.
This day, 7 October 2022, marks a day of 11th anniversary of the APTERR which have the main purposes on strengthening food security, alleviating poverty, and eradicating malnourishment in the time of emergency in ASEAN Plus Three (APT) region. Through these years, the APTERR has been implementing its activities in response to emergency situation occurred in the member countries amid the increasing intensity and frequency of disasters caused by climate change and global warming. For the last decade, over 30,000 MT amount of rice contributed by Malaysia, Thailand, the People’s Republic of China, Japan, and the Republic of Korea were released in order to help around five million people in emergency situations in Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand and Viet Nam. This proved that the APTERR plays an important role in providing humanitarian assistance and malnourishment eradication responding to emergencies and disasters.
The APTERR Secretariat led by Dr. Choomjet Karnjanakesorn visited the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta, Indonesia on 16 August 2022 to enhance cooperation on the APTERR activities. On this special occasion, the team also had great opportunities to meet with H.E. Lim Jock Hoi, Secretary-General of the ASEAN Secretariat; H.E. Ekkaphab Phanthavong, Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN for ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community; Mr. Ung Srengkong, Director of Corporate Affairs Directorate, Community and Corporate Affairs Department; and other distinguished ASEAN executive officers.
The APTERR Secretariat, led by Dr. Choomjet Karnjanakesorn, General Manager, visited the Mekong River Commission Secretariat (MRCS) in Lao PDR on 7 July 2022, to discuss and exchange information on food security in the region.
Dr. Choomjet Karnjanakesorn, General Manager (GM) of the APTERR Secretariat, accompanied with Mr. Toshiki Tojo, Japanese Expert, and the APTERR staff had a fruitful meeting with Lao PDR’s government agencies and subsequently visited the warehouse for inspecting the APTERR stocks on 8 July 2022 in Vientiane.
