Asean Plus Three Emergency Rice Reserve 

 On 24 May 2023, the APTERR Secretariat team led by Dr. Choomjet Karnjanakesorn, together with the AFSIS Secretariat led by Dr. Waraporn Saelee, and staff from Office of Agricultural Economics (OAE) of Thailand attended the virtual ASEAN Food Security Reserve Board (AFSRB) Intersessional Meeting at the APTERR Secretariat’s Meeting room. The virtual meeting was held by AFSRB Secretariat and Indonesia, and was participated by ASEAN Member countries as well as other related organisations, for instance, the ASEAN Secretariat (ASEC) and the ASEAN Food Security Information System (AFSIS) Secretariat.

 

The main focus of the meeting was to discuss on the draft of ASEAN Leaders’ Declaration on Strengthening Food Security and Nutrition in Time of Crises. In this regard, Dr. Karnjanakesorn has emphasised the importance of APTERR mechanisms as one of the methods to strengthen food security, reduce poverty and malnourishment in ASEAN Plus Three region. Furthermore, the APTERR Secretariat reaffirmed the statement of the ASEAN Leaders’ Declaration on Strengthening Food Security and Nutrition in Time of Crises in terms of strengthening the existing mechanism of ASEAN Plus Three Emergency Rice Reserves (APTERR) by enhancing the effectiveness and quick release of emergency rice reserves.

 

The result of this virtual meeting will be further considered in the upcoming 43rd Meeting of the ASEAN Food Security Reserve Board (AFSRB) which will be held during 6-7 June 2023 at Bogor, Indonesia. The APTERR Secretariat was also invited to attend the on-site meeting in order to report the progress of APTERR activities to the AFSRB.
