The distribution of APTERR stocks, including 200 MT from P.R. China and 750 MT from the Republic of Korea (ROK) under the Tier 3 programme, has been swiftly carried out to provide timely assistance to over hundred thousand people affected by widespread floods and landslides triggered by the monsoon season and Typhoon Yagi in Myanmar.
On 14 October 2024, a ceremonial handover of 200 MT from P.R. China and 52.71 MT from the ROK was held at the office of Department of Agriculture (DOA), Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation, in Mandalay, attended by Mr. Thura Soe, Deputy Director-General of DOA and the APTERR Council member. The 200 MT-rice from P.R. China is part of APTERR’s 950-MT rice assistance for flooded-affected people while 52.71-MT rice from the ROK is the remainder of the ROK’s previous 2,500-MT donation for the internally displaced people (IDPs) affected by ongoing conflicts and the recent monsoonal floods and Typhoon Yagi across the country.
Meanwhile, the rice distribution has begun in other beneficial regions in response to the emergency needs of people affected. P.R. China’s 200 MT has been released in Mandalay region while the ROK’s 750 MT has been allocated across Yangon, Bago and Ayeyarwady regions, with 250 MT each.
The APTERR Secretariat has been working closely with the DOA to ensure that the rice distribution is carried out effectively, transparently and credibly, so that all those in need can access to the rice assistance.
