ASEAN Plus Three Emergency Rice Reserve 

Dr. Choomjet Karnjanakesorn, General Manager (GM) of the APTERR Secretariat, engaged in a fruitful discussion with the representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (MAFRA) and the Korea Agro-Fisheries and Food Trade Corporation (aT) led by Mr. Sang Moon Byun, Director of Food Grain Policy Division of MAFRA and an APTERR Council member, on enhancing the Tier 3 programme for an effective and timely response in time of emergency, thereby strengthening food security.

 

 

During a visit to the APTERR Secretariat on 18 July 2024, Mr. Sang Moon Byun reiterated Korea’s unwavering support for APTERR, particularly through Tier 3 programme, in preventing food crises in the ASEAN Plus three region. Meanwhile, Dr. Karnjanakesorn assured that Korea’s contribution to the Tier 3 programme would be utilised to meet the needs of rice assistance during emergencies and for other humanitarian purposes, in alignment with APTERR’s objectives and UN’s SDGs of ending hunger.

Korea has been playing an active role in APTERR. This year, Korea is increasing its support for the Tier 3 programme by contributing 10,000 MT of rice to bolster food security in the region.

 

 

The representatives from MAFRA, namely Mrs. Hana Lee, Assistant Director of Food Grain Policy Division, and from aT, namely Mrs. Danbee Lee, Director, and Mr. Seungwook Lee, Deputy Director of Grain Aid Department also attended the meeting.
