Due to the severe impacts of ongoing conflicts and worsening floods, 2,500 MT of rice contributed by the Republic of Korea through Tier 3 programme has been released for immediate emergency response to assist the internally displaced people (IDPs) affected by disasters across Myanmar.
On 12 September 2024, the General Manager of the APTERR Secretariat, Dr. Choomjet Karnjanakesorn, attended a handover ceremony in Shan State to deliver 108.69-MT rice, part of Korea’s total 2,500-MT contribution, to support those affected in meeting their daily food needs and assisting them in their recovery. The rice distribution was timely, as Myanmar was heavily impacted by destructive, widespread floods caused by Typhoon Yagi, the strongest in Asia this year. The APTERR Secretariat has been closely cooperating with the Department of Agriculture (DOA) of Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation (MOALI) of Myanmar to ensure that the distribution will be carried out effectively, transparently and credibly, ensuring that all those in need can access to the rice assistance.
Shan State Chief Minister U Aung Aung expressed his gratitude to Korea for their generous contribution and the APTERR Secretariat for support of this programme implementation. The representatives from the DOA and other local state agencies also attended this significant event.
Korea’s 2,500-MT rice contribution assists almost 350,000 IDPs affected by disasters across two regions and six states consisting of Kachin, Kayah, Kayin, Chin, Sagaing, Magway, Shan and Rakhine.
Further, the APTERR Secretariat also on 14 September 2024 visited the DOA’s Thanlyin warehouse in Yangon to inspect Korea’s 750-MT rice prepositioned in the country in preparedness for acute emergency.
